Marseille: still minors, already killers
70 min. / EN, FR/ HD / 2024
In 2023, Marseille suffered 49 "narcomicides," a contraction of narco-banditry and homicide, a term coined for the Phocaean city. Between settling scores and indiscriminate shootings, little is generally known about these murders at the foot of the towers. After the fact, the press profiles the people who were shot. Often young boys involved in drug trafficking, when they are not collateral victims.
But what do we know about the killers?
Who are these figures who fire military-grade weapons at a rival or neighbor? According to the justice system, it is often a child hiding under the hood: 60% of those charged with murders and attempted murders related to drug trafficking are between 14 and 21 years old!
Further investigation into the phenomenon of Marseille's "baby killers." Last April, France discovered videos of Mattéo, 18, now suspected of five murders. The young man, wearing a hoodie and laughing, tells the camera that he is racking up contracts. The alleged killer is believed to have worked for the DZ Mafia. Over several months, our journalists managed to film the foot soldiers and henchmen of the two powerful criminal gangs fighting for control of drug dealing spots: Yoda and DZ Mafia. In Marseille, three-quarters of murders are linked to this war. Contracts worth between €10,000 and €30,000, recruitment on social media, hitmen barely 15 years old, and sometimes forced "labor."
