BLACK DAY
JOUR NOIRis the story of a black man, Sikou Niakate, who, on his 30th birthday, asks himself the question of fatherhood: "Am I ready to become a father?" At that moment, he feels that his hesitation is linked to his skin color. He then plunges us into a deeply intimate state of affairs. During a normal day on the streets of Paris, where seemingly mundane situations unfold (walking, shopping, taking the subway, having a coffee on a terrace...), he recounts the constant control he exercises over his body, his behavior, the way he dresses, speaks and moves, so as not to conform to the terrible stereotypes attached to black people. Everything will be—from the inside—observed, dissected, and expressed. Does he want to—can he—pass all this on to his child?
A three-episode podcast to listen to in order, available for free on all podcast apps.
Podcast: You Will Be a Black Man, My Son
Télérama
In Jour noir, a man wanders around Paris, recalling moments throughout his life that have reminded him of his skin color. This almost slam-like inner monologue invites us to question ourselves. His introspective three-episode podcast opens the door to his inner turmoil throughout his day in Paris: anticipating hostile glances on the street, apprehension about other people's fear, hypervigilance, the terror of accidentally setting off the supermarket security gate, racist jokes at parties..."
