The Unpunished

The story of collective denial.

One stormy day in 2017, Joël Le Scouarnec climbed over his neighbors' fence and assaulted their 6-year-old daughter. This act was the starting point for a case that defies belief. Le Scouarnec, a retired surgeon and seemingly good family man, assaulted or raped hundreds of children over a period of more than 30 years. His "tendencies" were known not only at the hospital, but also among his close circle of friends and family. Why did no one do anything? This story takes us to the heart of our own deafness, far beyond that of the judicial system: there were testimonies, warnings, and signs in the Le Scouarnec case, but without the "diary" he himself wrote, meticulously recounting his criminal acts over all those years, his trial would never have taken place.

Excerpt

"L'Impuni" does not target anyone in particular because it concerns us all.
It attempts to understand and put into words what cannot be expressed, revealing the hidden side of a case involving around three hundred alleged victims. It seeks to raise questions that may help us understand how this happens, why laws are not enforced, but above all why we continue to feed impunity together instead of standing up against it. It is the result of an investigation that is not imaginary, but takes place in the imagination: on everything that escapes us in the face of the onslaught, and yet where the hope of our insurrection lies."
