Colombia is home to over 10% of the world's terrestrial flora and fauna, a unique biodiversity that thrives within a wide range of ecosystems. This exceptional richness makes Colombia the second most megadiverse country in the world. But when it comes to birds, it takes the top spot.
With around 2,000 different bird species, representing 20% of the world's birdlife, 84 of which are endemic, Colombia has rightly earned the nickname "Land of Birds." In June 2023, the country launched an ambitious national strategy that combines bird conservation and economic development. This program, focused on building a sustainable economy, relies on a form of ecotourism centered on birds: birdwatching (also known as avitourism or ornithological observation).
