In the early 1980s, there were fewer than 25,000 women behind bars in the United States. Forty years later, there are more than 230,000 of them. The number of women in prison has literally exploded, growing twice as fast as the number of men in prison.
What are the mechanisms that lead so many women to prison? How can such a sharp increase be explained? What about the social consequences of such a phenomenon?
Through the example of Oklahoma, the state of all records, this report deciphers the realities behind these figures, while exploring initiatives that attempt to remedy this unprecedented crisis.
